London Metropolitan University (Knowledge Connect)
This project is in line with the recent government announcement of healthy living & Anti-Obesity
programme. The government report claims UK to have an overall obese population in 20 years time,
which will result in more heart disease, diabetes, depression and other ailments related to the health
issue of being overweight, which converts into an unhealthy population and increased government spending.
The project aims to evaluate the feasibility of using a mobile device to improve the monitoring and management
of the weight of young students. The selected population of students from the various Faculties will record
their daily intake of food & drinks (calorie intake) and receive advice on their BMI (data collected on height
and weight) by using a mobile device (using calDSg & calPHR Fitness Module). The system will provide alert
messages on calorie intake and target weight on the individual’s data collection. The data will be transferred
electronically to a central Hub for data store and knowledge management (using CALi3, calBI + the University’s
expertise in this area)
The research will conclude the findings with (1) reports on the individual students, (2) integrate all the data of
the individual Faculty and (3) an overall report for the University. The data analysis and customized report
is anticipated to help control the overall healthy living standards of the young students.
The project’s objective is to evaluate the role of the mobile device for data collection and data transfer to
a central server for an integrated information and customized
intelligent report which could be analyzed and prioritized for immediate or long term action by authenticated & responsible users.
The success of this project will open doors to expand this programme to schools and community centers within the Borough or Local Authority enabling much more efficiency in monitoring,
reporting and managing the population in a well formulated and user friendly method.
The success of this project would allow application of a KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER Proposal (KTP) to support
further work with mobile devices and operating systems with CAL2CAL Europe & London Metropolitan University.
